Downloading Free CD Covers?
On the Internet, there are a fair few sites that off the download of free CD Covers. These sites offer the files of a wide range of them for any user to download to their desktop PC, etc. These sites usually have lists on their home page showing the most popular files.
A user simply inputs data into a text field to see if these services have their required artwork on their servers available. If so, the user can then download their chosen artwork. The main reason people use these services can only be speculated upon, but it's fair to assume that users have digital music that they want to burn onto a CD - so they need to accompanying CD Covers for them.
If a user has purchased an album, say from a record store, imports it onto their PC, they may want the artwork to accompany it on their PC. So, a user may use such a service to attach a file to their mp3 album in a program such as iTunes. Although in iTunes, a user with an account can simply import one of their purchased CD's and simply choose "add album artwork" from the programs' preferences.
This is one use for such online services for obtaining free CD covers, but there are illegal activities in place that may use such services. Some people sell replicas of CD's and may obtain the artwork from such downloading sites. Doing such things is against the law of the majority of countries, thus potential harming music artists' profits and earnings. There are server criminal penalties, especially in the western world, for such practices (this practice is not recommended by this site).
CD artwork downloading sites DO have legal disclaimers included, specifying that their downloads are property and copyright of their original owners. The sites also have liability statements also.
