How CD Covers accompanies our lives...
Most of us have seen a CD cover at some point in our lives. Indeed, we see them on a daily basis - on our shelves, in our living room, in the record CD stores and now in 2008...on our mp3 players.
When we think of music, we think of the covers that accompanies it. The majority of people know what the Beetles "Lonely Hearts club Band" sleeve looks like - and if we don't know exactly, we know it's red! When you think of Queen, the image of four faces looming on a black background spring to mind.
When we buy music from the shops or download them from the internet, we see the CD Covers before we hear the album! So, the design has naturally become a very important part of music, be it directly or indirectly. A good CD Cover design can affect whether or not we purchase the music at all! It’s fair to assume that some people have bought albums solely because they were swayed by the design of the sleeve. Nowadays, we can buy music from iTunes and transfer the MP3 music files onto an iPod or Cell Phone. If music artwork didn't accompany the music files, the iTunes store would be a very bleak place to visit...just lists and links to tracks to download; we can imagine. Think of going down to your local music CD store and seeing the shelves empty of design work...just blank CD cases with the band title on!
Needless to say that CD Covers are part of our everyday lives, and hopefully, they're here to stay. Bands like "Hard Fi" are already opposed to CD artwork for some reason. We should hope that other bands don't follow suit. This kind of design is what imforms fans to what style of music they play, as well as a ‘face’ for it in many cases (mind the pun).
On a last note...when we think of our favorite music, we often think of the artwork that accompanies it. The two are almost married together, perfect for each other. So as music is in our lives - so too, is the cover that represents it.
